Abstract
Plateletpheresis is the centrifugal separation of platelets from whole blood, with a
continuous or intermittent return of platelet-poor red blood cells and plasma to the
donor. Platelet pheresis may be performed in multiple bag systems or in machines
especially designed for this purpose. The machine in most common use in foreign
countries is the Haemonetics device which uses the Latham bowl. Vigorous
chemotherapy as applied in the treatment of leukemias, Iymphomas and other neoplasms
increases the demand for specific blood components such as platelets.
This paper presents some data from 30 plateletpheresis using Haemonetics 30-S for 14
cases of thrombocytopenia admitted to the Severance Hospital, Yonsei University College
of Medicine from October, 1980 to February, 1981.
In summary, the Haemonetics 30-S cell separator had demonstrated the ability to
produce a good final product with minimal donor risk and discomfort. The recipients
have shown variable therapeutic responses, judging by correction of the initial defects.
The advantage of a single donor source who can be repeatedly pheresed, thus reducing
the risk of sensitization and disease transmission, makes this equipment particularly
desirable.
